What to Look for When Purchasing a Used Grain Trailer

It’s safe to say that most farmers out to purchase their first grain trailer prioritize functionality over features; and find that a used trailer is perfectly fine. However, with more than 20 trailer manufacturers in the market, and more used trailers coming out, the range of choices is only getting larger. What it often boils down to is finding a trailer that offers good quality at a competitive price.

A visit to a classified ads section for truck trailers will show dozens of new and used trailers for sale. Prices may vary from a brand-new or year-old unit going for $20,000 to $30,000, all the way down to corroded, banged-up trailers given at $5,000. While buying used might seem easier on your wallet, a used grain trailer took a lot of beating, so the amount you save may only end up in the pockets of a repair man.

Buying used vehicles requires close attention to quality inspection. It makes sense to pay attention to maintenance issues on old units, as it’s not always obvious how quickly repair costs can add up. If you buy a used trailer without checking for quality, you may be closer to the cost of a new trailer than you previously thought after adding up the repair costs.

When buying a used grain trailer, inspect the tires, kingpin, brakes, suspension, lighting system, doors, and tarp fasteners. Likewise, look for features that improve operator safety. Examples are view windows on the sidewalls, safety ropes, center brake light, an electric tarp, and an antilock brake system. These features can make a huge difference, especially to an older operator.

If you want a used trailer that’s easy to operate, pay close attention to the doors, as these are the moving parts you would be dealing with most often. If you’ve operated an old trailer with rusted door slides before, you know how difficult it could be. Used trucks often have these types of doors; so consider upgrading to some type of roller door assembly.

You can get used grain trailers from companies like Lyons Truck & Trailer, Inc. At such dealers, you can be sure that the used trailers you get are top-quality and in good condition. These dealers can also provide you with a used Kenworth truck, or a Peterbilt, and many other makes of truck to meet your hauling needs.
